In 1964 Consuelo de Saint Exupéry
wrote: "I always shake all over, when I open my husband's files
containing the letters, the drawings, and the telegrams. These secret
messages full of a lively affection have the tragic odour of my
past... These messages were my own property when they were sent
to me, today they belong to everyone".
Consuelo was always delighted
to show the text written by Saint Exupéry
in 1943, "prayer that might be said by Consuelo
every evening". :
Lord you do not need to bother much. Make
me simply as I am. I look vain in simple things, but in significant
things I am humble. I look selfish in simple things, but in
significant things I am able to give everything, even my own
life. I look impure in simple things, but I am happy only
in purity.
Lord, make me the same, always, to the women
my husband can read in me.
Lord, Lord, save my husband because he truly
loves me and without him I will never be an orphan. But Lord
makes that he dies before me, because even though he looks
strong he gets distressed when he cannot hear me making noise
in the house. Lord saves him from distress. Make that I always
make noise in the house, even if I have, from time to time
to break something.
Help me to remain faithful and blind to those
he despises or to those who hate him. It brings him misfortune
because he made his life through me.
Protect, Lord, our house
Your Consuelo, Amen
